Perfume bottle wholesale: what to know before you order

  • 26 Aug 2026

Buying perfume bottles wholesale is not one purchase. It is four: the glass body, the pump, the collar and the cap. If any one of them is specified wrong, the other three become unusable stock sitting in your warehouse.

This guide covers how wholesale pricing is built, why minimum order quantities exist, and the specifications you need in writing before you commit.

What sets the price?

Two suppliers can quote the same 50 ml bottle at very different prices. The gap usually comes down to four things.

Glass quality

Glass quality. Standard soda lime glass carries a slight green tint that shows through clear liquids. Low iron flint glass removes that tint and costs more to produce. For a fragrance sitting on a lit shelf, the difference is visible to the customer.

Mould status

Mould status. A stock mould costs you nothing upfront but your bottle shape is available to anyone else who orders it. A custom mould is a one time investment that gives you a shape nobody else can buy.

Surface decoration

Surface work. Frosting, coating, screen printing, hot stamping and metallising are separate production steps. Stack three of them on one bottle and the unit cost can double.

Order quantity and price breaks

Order quantity. Machine setup and mould changeover are fixed costs. Spreading them across 50,000 units instead of 5,000 changes the unit price materially. When you request a quote, ask for price breaks rather than one number.

Why minimum order quantities exist?

An MOQ is not a sales tactic. A glass furnace runs continuously and the production line has to be set up for your specific item. That setup time gets divided across the units produced, and below a certain volume the arithmetic stops working.

In practice you will meet three separate minimums:

One for the glass body, one for the pump and cap components, and one for surface decoration. They are rarely the same number. Ordering 5,000 bottles and 500 caps usually fails on the cap side.

Stock items carry lower minimums than custom production because the mould already exists. A common and sensible route is to start from a stock collection, prove the volume, then move to a custom mould once demand is stable.

You can see the stock ranges on the perfume bottle and products pages.

Neck finish: the specification people get wrong

The single most expensive mistake in wholesale ordering is a body and closure that do not fit each other.

Perfume bottles use two closure systems.

Crimp necks and FEA 15

Crimp necks, usually 15 mm, follow the FEA 15 standard. The pump is clamped onto the neck with a crimping tool and is not designed to come off again. This is the classic fine fragrance look, and it needs a crimping machine at your filling site.

Screw necks: 15/415, 18/410, 24/410

Screw necks are described by two numbers, such as 15/415, 18/410, 20/410 or 24/410. The first number is the neck diameter in millimetres. The second identifies the thread type and neck height. An 18/410 and an 18/415 share a diameter but differ in thread count and neck height, so they are not interchangeable.

Ask for the exact designation in writing. A catalogue line that says "18 mm" is not a specification.

Component ranges are on the pump and collar and plastic sprayers pages. The full neck finish reference is in our neck finish and pump compatibility guide.

Sampling before you commit

Order samples and test them with your own formula. Three checks matter.

Does the pump seat correctly and hold pressure without leaking at the neck.

Does your formula change colour or scent after contact with the glass and the pump gasket. Alcohol slowly attacks incompatible gasket materials, and the result does not appear on day one. Fill the sample, seal it and leave it at room temperature for three weeks before you judge it.

Does the cap hold. Open and close it thirty or forty times. Zamak caps are assembled from an outer shell and an inner threaded part, and a weak bond shows up as a cap that spins freely.

Lead time is a plan, not a date

Total lead time is a chain of steps that wait on each other: mould production if a custom mould is involved, entry into the glass production schedule, surface decoration, component supply, quality control and shipping.

Ask for each step separately. When something slips, this is the only way to see which link moved.

Custom moulds extend the chain significantly compared with stock items. Plan your launch date backwards from the mould, not forwards from the order.

Questions to send your supplier

The written checklist

Take this list into the first conversation and ask for written answers.

What is the unit price at each quantity break, and how long is the quotation valid. What are the separate minimums for glass, closures and decoration. What is the exact neck finish designation. What dimensional and fill volume tolerance do you accept. If a mould is required, who pays for it and who keeps it. What is the sampling lead time and cost. How many units per carton, and how does that palletise.

That last question sounds minor until you calculate freight. Cartons per pallet is what turns a unit price into a landed cost.

One more point for exporters: empty glass ships as ordinary cargo, while filled alcohol based fragrance is regulated as dangerous goods. Shipping components rather than finished product changes your logistics cost considerably.

Stock collection or custom mould

A custom mould gives your brand a shape that is hard to copy and immediately recognisable on a shelf. It costs a mould investment, a longer lead time and a higher minimum.

A stock collection is fast, has a low minimum and puts samples in your hands quickly. You build distinctiveness through the cap, the decoration and the colour instead of the silhouette. For a brand in its first years this is usually the better trade.

You can combine stock bodies with different caps and pumps in the configurator, and see how custom work runs on the bottle design and custom design services pages.
